This morning I woke up with an irresistible need to do some watercolouring. I’ve been reorganizing my craft room for the past 2 days to include an old wardrobe that belonged to my grandmother and so I couldn’t craft but I soooo wanted to !!!
So this morning I got up quickly and started crafting. I wondered what technique I would use but since I love them all so much, I decided I couln’t choose and did 4 projects ! And I looove them all !
The first thing I wanted to do was a Galaxy background. I made a few a month ago and I love how gorgeous and effortless it is !
In the past I tried a couple of techniques to do it : all watercolor or ink blending. But I have found that I get the best results by mixing these two techniques : first I apply distress inks over my watercolor paper and then spritz it heavily with water to make the colours blend. I found it gives better results if you include very light colours (you can always darken it later if necessary). I usually use « picked raspberry » because I love this colour in a galaxy background but this time I decided to change things up a little.
Once I’m satisfy with the result I let it air dry OR use my heat gun, depending on how impatient I am… 😜
After, I take my « black soot » Distrss Ink and ink blending tool and darken the edges. I try to make the edges uneven and give it a bit of a swirly motion.
After I put water droplets on top of it, espacially on darker areas to reveal the colour underneath. In this case I don’t let the water sit for too long. 2-3 seconds maybe. Sometimes if it doesn’t look good I put black ink over the splashes but you can still see the variation in colour and then it looks much better ! I finalize the background with white paint splatters.
I like how this one turned out but I admit I really prefer when there’s pink involved 😉
My next technique is totally inspired by all the lettering accounts I follow on Instagram. They like to create a watercolor backgrounds and letter on top of them. I love it ! And geometrical paterns seem to be trending lately so I thought I would give this a try ! Using a masking technique with small washi tape, I watercolored my background using this time my Gansai Tambi Watercolor set.
I love this set and particularly the green and pink I used today. The problem with these two colours is that they look beautiful together but they absolutely don’t mix well together as they create an ugly muddy colour. That’s why I decided to bring in some gold to use as a transition between the two, and I loove it !!! And when you remove the washi tape, it’s like magic !
After that I used the resist technique with a Simon Says Stamp background stamp that I almost never used before, which is a crime given how beautiful it is ! I embossed the background with versamark ink and white embossing powder from WOW and then used my Zig Clean Real Brush markers to watercolor. I first lay down all my colours. You don’t need much since the colour is quite concentrated and the surface very small.
After I take a paint brush and use water to reactivate the ink and color the entire shapes. I also used a tiny bit of golden paint left over from my previous colouring. I added more gold at the center of the circles.
I was going to stop there but then I realized I had used all my watercolour mediums except one : the new Distress Oxide Inks from Ranger. I love them so much I had to use them. I also wanted to use another technique so I decided to do some ink smooshing. I took a plastic bag I had laying around and applied the inks directly onto the bag and then spritzed it with water.
Then I placed my paper on top and turned the whole thing over to have a better view of where each color was going and how they all mixed together.
I dried my paper using my heat gun and then took the same bag without adding anything and just placed it over my paper again in a different direction this time. I dried it again and continued applying the plastic bag in some areas to give the look of color splatters.
I also added gold splatters to finish it. I must say it doesn’t always turn out great but this time I really love it ! And the gold look gorgeous on top of it all. 😍
I spent something like a couple of hours on these backgrounds and boy did I have fun ! You should really try it 😉
I will come back in a few days to show you how I turned these backgrounds into cards !
